Roofing

This is what our house looks like lately. Like a wreak in an overgrown yard somewhere.

What's really going on is the replacement of our old shingles. The roofers are rushing so everything is in place for the arrival of Hurricane Irene this weekend. She probably won't carry much punch in the Adirondacks because it's so far inland. But tarps and hurricanes don't tend to mix, no matter how securely you put the tarp on.

As for the overgrown yard ... That's actually a view of two garden plots in front of the porch that are separated by a 10 foot walking space in the middle. Since we're nearing the end of the growing season, there are some tall spent plants like milkweed. But there are also some coneflowers, beebalm, heather, and hydrangea that aren't ready to call it a season yet. They're just mostly visible from the other side.

Meanwhile, this is how the deck is coming along. It's looking really good! And the roof on this end is already in place.

I learned a lot about roofing during all this ... at least a lot for someone who knew nothing about it before. I learned the difference between 3 Tab Shingles, Architectural Shingles, and Metal Roofs. And I pretty much watched in awe as the experts walked around the roof on their toes and installed the Architectural Shingles that we chose in place.

There isn't much official summer left now. We're already feeling hints of Fall at night in the Adirondacks. For some reason we seem to be especially over run with crickets this year. There are lots of grasshoppers as well (like the one on the flower above), but I think the crickets may have beat them out in sheer numbers. In the evening there's quite a chorus of cricket-song.

We aren't likely to have a chance to enjoy our new screened in porch much before the Adirondack weather chases us inside for the season. But I'm enjoying watching it go up. And I know our husky mix dog will be enjoying lots of nice cool nights out there.

I hope everyone who was in the path of yesterday's earthquake on the east coast is all right. And that everyone in Hurricane Irene's path stays dry and safe!

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Your home looks like it is coming along nicely. I haven't noticed the crickets here so much as the locust this summer, they can get pretty loud in the evenings. The weather here has been pretty hot in the day, but the nights cool down some. I love the Autumn season, it is my favorite, but much to short. I miss the changing of the beautiful leaves in the Fall. Back in Maryland the Fall was the most beautiful time of the year, but here in Iowa it just isn't the same. I'm sure up there in NY state the Fall are lovely also.

We enclosed our porch 5 years ago, I can use it all year long if I choose too, but when the winter days get -20 below zero, I prefer to stay in my cozy little reading corner.

I love your home and love your new deck a lot. I'd be on that during the good weather most of the time. Way cool.

I hope you don't get anything from Irene for your roofs sake.

Have a terrific day. :)

I hope you use your deck as much as we do...it seems we live out there.

That's a beautiful front porch. I hope they get the roof done before the tropical storm/hurricane hits. Wind is no good for tarps.

When I had a roof replaced, they left nail all over the lawn. Be careful.

That deck is going to be wonderful! I do miss the front porch and balcony we had on our old house. Something to remember when it's reno time.

It's all coming along so nicely, I can't wait to see the end product!

Gigi Ann, Fall is my favorite season as well. The best part of it in Adirondacks is that after it's over, the green of the white pines still dominate. So it's never dreary.

Our porch isn't going to be fully enclosed like yours, only screened. But I'm sure we're going to spend lots of time out there. Not in -20 of course. I won't even let the dogs out to enjoy it then. Though I'm sure our husky mix will ask. LOL

Sandee, thanks! We intend to use the new deck as much as possible.

I've got my fingers crossed that Hurricane Irene will be kind to our new roof! It's ironic, there's a Princess Irene in the book I'm writing. She's not a major character, but she's definitely destructive. LOL

The Fly in the Web, I have a feeling that we'll be living out there most of the time in the good weather too. My husband expects us to eat most of our meals out there. And I'm planning on having a comfortable lounge chair that I can spend all day reading and napping in.

Theresa, thanks for the heads up! They've been pretty good about nails. But I'm still picking them up. Our youngest dog will eat just about everything. That worries me the most.

With the usually dew ridden grass, ticks, wolf spiders, and garter snacks, we tend to wear sturdy shoes. I still managed to get bitten by something nasty this summer. The bite took a couple of weeks to clear up.

Debbie, thank you! I love having outside spaces! Since we've got so many biting bugs here, the screening is really necessary. Even the dogs couldn't stand going on the open deck this summer.

I'll be sure to show off the finished deck whenever it's done.

I hope your roof is done. And I hope you're having a good week.

I left you a return comment on my blog and tried to e-mail it to you, but it got booted back. Just wanted to give you a heads up that the e-mail linked to your blog isn't correct.

Here's the comment I left:

@ Mary Anne, thank you for checking in. It did go well, but I won't know anything before tomorrow. And tomorrow I have another interview for an assistant position.

Theresa, thanks for the heads up on the email! I think I have it fixed now. I hope I do, anyway.

I've got my fingers crossed for the interview from yesterday and the one for tomorrow!
